Assadullah Sarwari: Russian-educated and served as an air force pilot under the monarchy of Mohammed Zahir Shah, and later as the air force garrison commander under President Daud Khan in 1973.In September 1979 Sarwari was involved in plot to oust prime minister Hafizullah Amin. After failure of plot, he escaped to Soviet Embassy, where he was given asylum until Soviet invasion and fall of Amin in December 1979.

His film Paradise Now, about two Palestinian men preparing for a suicide attack in Israel, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2006.In 1998 he directed his first film, Het 14de kippetje (The Fourteenth Chick), from a script by writer Arnon Grunberg. Later films are the short Nazareth 2000 (2000) and Rana's Wedding (2002).

He was a member of the Canadian House of Commons representing Gatineau from 1997 to 2004, and represented Gatineau—La Lièvre from 1988 to 1997. He was born in Buckingham, Quebec and is an administrator, and a teacher. He served as the chair of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts. He did not run for re-election in 2004.
