Marin Marais: was a French composer and viol player. He studied composition with Jean-Baptiste Lully, often conducting his operas, and with master of the bass viol Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe for 6 months. He was hired as a musician in 1676 to the royal court of Versailles. He did quite well as court musician, and in 1679 was appointed "ordinaire de la chambre du roy pour la viole", a title he kept until 1725.

Alexandru Adalbert Marin: was an experimental particle physicist, a professor of physics at MIT, Boston University and Harvard University, and a researcher at CERN and JINR.He received his Ph.D. in physics from the Central Institute for Physics in Bucharest in 1977. Before moving to the United States in 1983, he worked on high energy physics and astrophysics experiments in Romania, the Soviet Union and CERN. He was Principal Investigator for experiments carried out at CERN and at Dubna from 1974–1979, and from 1974–1983 was Principal Investigator for the Transition Radiation Experiment on the INTERCOSMOS 17 satellite, and for the ASTRO1 and ASTRO2 experiments on the Romanian Astronaut flight.

A 201 cm (6-foot, 7-inch) guard/forward from Duke University, Marin was named to the 1967 NBA All-Rookie Team and spent 11 seasons in the NBA (1966-1977), playing for the Baltimore Bullets, Houston Rockets, Buffalo Braves and Chicago Bulls. The left-handed Marin was a two-time All-Star and scored 12,541 points in his career. He is perhaps most remembered for being traded to the Houston Rockets (along with future considerations) for Elvin Hayes.
