Hi alex,
There are several reason for "early pregnancy loss" , in general term we called it miscarriage too.Few reasons are here , my be they
satisfied your curiousness :-
1-Doctors believe that certain errors in the chromosomes of the developing baby are incompatible with life and lead to miscarriage.
2-Moms over 35 are also more likely to miscarry . Most women who have pregnancies affected by chromosomal abnormalities will have normal subsequent pregnancies.
3-Some types of viral and bacterial infections can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth.
4-Sometimes underlying chronic health conditions, such as diabetes or celiac disease, in the mother can lead to an unexpected miscarriage. etc
Sometimes even when the doctor tests for chromosomal abnormalities in the lost pregnancy, the results come back normal. It can be very hard to cope with having no answer for why a miscarriage occurred, and you may be tempted to blame yourself. But miscarriage is almost never anyone's fault.

I do agree with that the increase in age affects the chance of miscarriage and the level of chances is vary to different different age criteria , few facts are given below:-
• Women under the age of 35 yrs old have about a 15% chance of miscarriage
• Women who are 35-45 yrs old have a 20-35% chance of miscarriage
• Women over the age of 45 can have up to a 50% chance of miscarriage
• A woman who has had a previous miscarriage has a 25% chance of having another miscarriage.
