He is influenced by bands such as The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Birthday Party, The Fire Engines and Sonic Youth. Before The Horrors, he played in a band called Xerox.In order to create his distinctive sound when playing guitar for The Horrors, Hayward is known to reroute the wiring at the back of his effects pedals. It is speculated that this was helped by his gaining a BSc in Physics at University College London; he has written a short article on rewiring pedals for the first issue of the Horrors fanzines. Hayward uses two Fender Jaguars: a White American '62 Reissue and a Sunburst Japanese Reissue, and a Fender Hot Rod Deville amplifier.
