In the seventh century, Saint Hilda of Whitby, England, answered the call of St. Aidan, Bishop of Lindisfarne, to return to Northumbria where she grew up and become a nun. The Venerable Bede, a monk, scholar, and author, described Hilda as a woman full of energy and wisdom, as well as a skilled administrator and teacher. The name became rare in England during the later Middle Ages, but was revived in the 19th century.
