Jacinta's origin is Old Greek, and its use, Portuguese and Spanish. Jacinta is a variant of Hyacinth (English). The name Hyacinth was borne in Greek mythology by a beautiful young man beloved by the god Apollo, who was accidentally killed by a discus thrown by the latter. Apollo made a flower, the hyacinth, from his spilled blood, and stained it with his tears of grief. The mythological flower is more likely to be the violet Iris rather than the modern day Hyacinth. The name was borne by several early saints, notably the 3rd century Saint Hyacinth, who was martyred under the persecution of Valerian I together his brother Protus.
