Sadhbh is the modern spelling of the old irish name "Sadb" meaning "sweet" or "goodness".
There were many Sadhbhs throughout irish history, daughter of Conn of the Hundred Battles and also of Brian Boru. The most well known Sadhbh was married to Fionn Mac Cumhail and was mother of OisÃn. Fionn found her in the forest in the shape of a deer which she was forced to take by a sorcerer who she had spurned in love but when Fionn took her into his house she magically turned back into a beautiful girl. They soon married but she was kidnapped by the sorcerer when she was pregnant and turned back into a deer and was never seen again. a few months after her disapearance a baby boy was found in the forest and Fionn recognised him as his own. He never married again. |
