Austin Carlile Dealing with Marfan Syndrome

The musician from Of Mice & Men, Austin Carlile has Marfan Syndrome, which is an incurable connective tissue disorder. In fact, the metalcore band had to cancel the end of their European tour as Carlile was having trouble due to complications of Marfan syndrome.

Many fans of Carlile went on social media to wish him well in hopes that he will get better soon. However, the singer had to point out the harsh reality that one cannot simply “get better,” as it's a chronic condition that never goes away.

Marfan syndrome impacts the strength and elasticity of the connective tissue throughout the body affecting the eyes, blood vessels, heart, and skeleton. The inherited disorder can be life-threatening as it has the potential to cause cardiovascular malformations. Not to mention the multitude of other symptoms, from detached retina to abnormal curves of the spine, and more.

Carlile inherited the disease from his mother, which eventually took her life. With modern medicine, people with Marfan syndrome can live much longer than before. Carlile relies on a team of specialists from Stanford University to keep him healthy.
