The feminine name Britney is a variant of Brittany, which is from the name of the region in France that is in the northwest called the French Bretagne. It was taken from the peninsula in the former provinces in the northwestern part of France. The place was named after the Briton settlers that fled to the area during the invasion of England by the Anglo-Saxon, hence “from Brittany, a Breton”.
The name Britney became popular as a given name and first came into America during the 1970s.
