She was brought up in a house commissioned by her father, a prosperous merchant. The two-story Italianate Style house, known as the Emily Carr House, is now on the Canadian Register of Historic People and Places. Her parents died when she was in her early teens, and on the advice of a friend she moved to San Francisco when she reached 18 to study art at the California School of Design.
