He represented Grenville South in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1867 to 1872.Clarke served as mayor of Prescott from 1866 to 1867. Charles Clarke: was speaker of the Legislature of Ontario in 1880-1883 and served as Liberal MLA for Wellington Centre from 1871 to 1886 and for Wellington East from 1886 to 1891. He was born in Lincoln, England in 1826, studied there with George Boole, apprenticed as a draper and came to Canada West in 1844. He joined his mother and stepfather on a farm in the Niagara District and later moved with them to Elora. He opened a store with his stepfather there. He was editor for the Journal and Express newspapers in Hamilton and helped establish the Elora Backwoodsman. He served on the town council for Elora and was reeve from 1859 to 1864 and from 1867 to 1868. He commanded a local militia unit during the Fenian raids, becoming lieutenant-colonel. In 1874, he helped introduce legislation that established the secret ballot for elections in the province. He became clerk of the legislature in January 1892 and served until 1907. He died in Elora in 1909.

William Aurelius Clarke: was a merchant and political figure in Ontario, Canada. He represented Wellington North in the Canadian House of Commons from 1911 to 1921 as a Conservative. He was born in Arthur, Ontario, the son of William Clarke and Margaret Dryden. Clarke entered business as a merchant in Palmerston. In 1893, he married S. Johnston. Clarke ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the House of Commons in 1908. He was a Unionist Party member from 1917 to 1921. Clarke was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1921. He died in Palmerston at the age of 71.

H. Clarke and Company formed a malt dealership with "barley king” Wilmot D. Matthews then five years later they established the Canada Malting Company Limited of which Clarke was president.

John Fitzgerald Clarke: was an Ontario physician and political figure. He represented Norfolk North in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1871 to 1879. He was born in Coventry, England in 1827, the son of a Congregational minister who was sent to Upper Canada as a missionary in 1837. He studied medicine at McGill College and settled in Vittoria. He moved to Simcoe in 1851. He served on the town council and was the coroner for Norfolk County from 1848 to 1870. Clarke was editor and owner of the Long Point Advocate. He was later named sheriff for Thunder Bay District and moved to Port Arthur (later part of the city of Thunder Bay), where he died in 1887.
