He defended the twice and quickly became a highly regarded champion, but lost the belt in an upset loss to rising phenom Diego Corrales via a devastating TKO. Garcia never regained his former stature after the loss, and in his next fight was TKO'd by Ben Tackie, a knockout deemed Knockout of the Year by The Ring in 2000.
