He lived in the Soviet Union and Russia since 1939 and lost most of his family in the Holocaust.He left a large body of work that included twenty-two symphonies and seventeen string quartets; according to one reviewer he ranked as, "the third great Soviet composer, along with Prokofiev and Shostakovich".

Mieczyslaw Józef Batsch: was a Polish soccer forward. An excellent scorer, he represented both Pogon Lwów and the Polish National Team.Apart from playing soccer, Batsch was a very talented mechanics engineer, a graduate of Lwów's renowned Technical University (Politechnika Lwowska).In the early 1920s he was a key player in the legendary forward formation of Pogon, which was undoubtedly the best team in Poland, being multiple-year national champions (1922, 1923, 1925, 1926). Together with Waclaw Kuchar and Józef Garbien, he scored several goals. His career lasted from 1916 to 1929, after which he occasionally played on the team Oldboye Lwów, which consisted of soccer veterans from Lwów.
