Hua Luogeng: was a Chinese mathematician born in Jintan, Jiangsu. He was the founder and pioneer of many fields in mathematical research. He wrote more than 200 papers and monographs, many of which became classic documents. Since his sudden death while delivering a lecture in the University of Tokyo, Japan, many mathematics secondary education programs have been named after him. In the early 1930's, his book on cumulative prime number theory has been influential to many subsequent number theorists in China, including renowned Chen Jingrun who obtained the best result so far in the binary Goldbach conjecture. Hua also made contributions to the development of college education in China. He was the first Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Vice President of University of Science & Technology of China (USTC), a new type of Chinese university established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1958, which was aimed to foster skilled researchers necessary for the economic development, defense and education in science and technology.

Ni Hua: is a Chinese chess player.Ni learned to play chess at six. He won the S.T. Lee Cup for under 14 year-olds in 1996 and 1997 and repeated the performance in a higher age group in 1999. In 2000 he played in his first Olympiad in Istanbul, where he scored 5.5/9. In the 2001 China-USA Summit Match, Ni Hua scored notable victories against Dmitry Schneider and Hikaru Nakamura.

Yu Hua: is a Chinese author. He studied dentistry but soon decided to write fiction in 1983 because it allowed him to be more creative and flexible. He grew up during the Cultural Revolution so many of his stories and novels are marked by this experience. His early work can be compared with a nightmarish vision of a visit to the dentist: sadistic and brutal. Yu Hua has so far written three novels, six collections of stories, and three collections of essays. His most important novels are called Chronicle of a Blood Merchant and To Live. The latter novel was adapted for film by Zhang Yimou. Because the film was banned in China, it instantly made the novel a bestseller and Yu Hua a worldwide celebrity. His novels have been translated into English, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Spanish, Swedish, Japanese, Korean and Malayalam.
