In 1997, she ran for the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in the riding of Edmonton Riverview as a candidate for the Liberal Party of Alberta. She defeated her closest rival, Progressive Conservative Gwen Harris by more than 900 votes. Sloan declined to seek re-election in 2001, and ran for city council in 2004. She finished second of nine candidates in Ward 1 (behind incumbent councillor and Sloan's former Liberal caucus colleague Karen Leibovici) and was elected. While on city council, she has served as councillor responsible for the Senior Citizens portfolio.

William Sloan: was a Canadian businessman and Liberal politician. He was Member of Parliament for Comox-Atlin from 1904 until 1909, when he resigned to provide a seat for William Templeman. Born in Wingham, Ontario, Sloan continued to be active in provincial politics, serving as MLA for Nanaimo from 1916 until his death in 1928. A minister in the Liberal cabinets of the time, Sloan held the posts of Minister of Mines, Commissioner of Fisheries, Clerk of the Executive Council, and Provincial Secretary.

Gordon McGregor Sloan: was a lawyer, judge and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Vancouver Centre in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1933 to 1937 as a Liberal. After the war, Sloan articled in Victoria, was called to the British Columbia bar in 1921 and practised in Vancouver from 1921 to 1933. He served in the provincial cabinet as Attorney-General. In April 1937, Sloan resigned his seat and was named to the British Columbia Court of Appeal. He served on a number of commissions: the Federal Royal Commission into Salmon fishing in 1940, the Workmens Compensation Board Inquiry in 1942, the Royal Commission on Forest Resources from 1943 to 1945, the Workmens Compensation Board Inquiry in 1952 and the Royal Commission on Forest Resources from 1955-1957. In 1944, he was named Chief Justice for the Court of Appeal. Sloan also served as mediator in a number of provincial and national labour disputes.
