He was born in Kansas City and originally signed with the Padres as a non-drafted free agent out of Rockhurst University in 2005. Chang was released in 2008, after three seasons in the Padres organization. The Pirates signed him and sent him to Double-A Altoona, where he appeared in five games. He has a minor-league line of .258/.330/.375. The infielder came to the Padres in as an undrafted free agent in 2005 after trying his luck during an open try-out.

Chang had three (older) sisters and one (younger) brother. After graduation, Chang worked for the Council of Agriculture in Guangzhou, the capital city of Guangdong Province. During this period of time Shen Tsung-han (1895–1980, ???, born Ningbo, Zhejiang; death Taipei, Taiwan) was one of his mentors. Shen was the second and former Director-general of the Council of Agriculture.
