Denis Gaultier     Denis Gaultier       Origin/Culture/Country: French

Denis Gaultier: was a French lutenist and composer. He was a cousin of Ennemond Gaultier, with whom he was closely connected (Denis was called "Gaultier le jeune" to separate him from Ennemond, but nonetheless publications often misattributed works between them or printed only their last name); perhaps also a student of Charles Racquet, whose death he commemorated with a tombeau. He held no court position, but gained fame through salon playing; his works consist mainly of dance suites for the lute. Three published collections of his music appeared later in his life: La rhétorique des dieux (1652), containing suites arranged into the 12 modes; Pièces de luth sur trois différens modes nouveaux (c. 1670), whose title page designates the contents as wholly his own; and Livre de tablature ... de Mr. Gaultier Sr. de Nève et de Mr. Gaultier son cousin (c. 1672).

Ennemond Gaultier     Ennemond Gaultier       Origin/Culture/Country: French

Ennemond Gaultier: was a French lutenist and composer. He was one of the masters of the 17th century French lute school. He worked first in Lyon and in 1620, he became valet of the Queen Mother Marie de' Medici and court lutenists in Paris. It is possible that he was a pupil of René Mezangeau. In 1631, he retired to Nèves and he spent there the rest of his life.

Pierre Gaultier     Pierre Gaultier       Origin/Culture/Country: French

Pierre Gaultier: was a French scholar, lutenist and composer. After joining the order of the Society of Jesus in Orléans in 1621, he became ordained priest and universal scholar. He was sent to the headquarter of his order in Rome, where he made the acquaintance of his future secular patron, prince Johann Anton I. of Eggenberg (1610–1649), then ambassador of the Habsburgian emperor Ferdinand III to Pope Urban VIII. Probably around 1640, Gaultier returned to the monastery of Caen, where he worked as director of studies until his death in 1681.

Jules De Gaultier     Jules De Gaultier       Origin/Culture/Country: French

Jules De Gaultier: was a French philosopher and essayist. He was a contributor to Mercure de France and one of the chief advocates of "nietzscheism" in vogue in the literary circles of the day. He was known especially for his theory of "bovarysme" (the name taken from Flaubert's novel), by which he meant the continual need of humans to invent themselves, to lie to themselves. His books include De Kant à Nietzsche (1900) and Le Bovarysme, essai sur le pouvoir d'imaginer (1902).[1]
