As the current Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel holds a lot upon her shoulders as the first woman at the head of a grand coalition of the Christian Democratic Union, and its Bavarian sister party, the Social Democratic Party of Germany and the Christian Social Union. Moreover, she is the leader of the Christian Democratic Union right now too.

 

Merkel used to be a research scientist, as she holds a doctorate in physical chemistry. However, after the revolutions that happened in 1989, she entered politics and served as the deputy spokesperson for the East German Government.

 

In 2015, against political resistance, Merkel gave sanctuary to 1.1 million people in Germany. In fact, a whole industry was born to analyze her generous response to the biggest refugee crisis that happened since World War II. Merkel’s response to the crises – was that Germany can handle this, and the country will handle the crisis situation and help refugees. In 2016, Merkel was named by TIME magazine as one of the 100 most influential leaders.
