Darmin Nasution – Indonesian Economist

As the current Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Darmin Nasution has many key responsibilities. He was appointed by President Joko Widodo in a cabinet reshuffle in 2015 replacing Sofyan Djalil. He was formerly the Governor of the Bank of Indonesia from 2010 to 2013 under Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s rule.

 

Before his political career, Nasution was part of the faculty at the University of Indonesia School of Economics. In fact, he was the Deputy Chair for the Lembaga Penyelidikan Ekonomi dan Masyarakat or the Institute for Economic and Social Research.

 

During his career, Nasution was also the Director General of the Financial Institutions for the Indonesian Ministry of Finance. As well as, the chairman for the Indonesia’s Capital Market and Financial Institution Supervisory Agency but was later transferred to by the Director General of Taxation in the Ministry of Finance.

 

In 2009, he was appointed as the Senior Deputy Governor of the Bank of Indonesia. However, a short time later he became the acting governor as the previous governor, Boediono, resigned a couple months before. In 2016, Nasution was named one of the 20 most powerful and influential people in Indonesia by GlobeAsia magazine.

 

The masculine name Darmin is Javanese and is a derivative of Darman, which means “happy and peaceful”. While others believe it could be related to the name Darimin, which means “please looks” in Javanese.
