Sergio Moro – Brazilian Judge

Many people in Brazil call Sergio Moro, “SuperMoro”. In fact, many Brazilians on the streets of Rio de Janeiro will stop and chant his name as if he was a huge soccer star. However, Moro is just a judge, but he is a judge prosecuting a large corruption scandal that could take down a President and even change the culture of the country.

Moro’s investigation – Operation Car Wash – discovered that many kickbacks were being paid to politicians and middlemen in exchange for contracts at the state-run oil company, Petrobras. Although there is a lot of money involved, the political impact will be larger, as hundreds of people are under investigation.

Even though President Dilma Rousseff has not been directly linked to using bribes, he’s now looking at impeachment due to Moro’s investigation. Moro has been blamed for ignoring due process, but he is willing to take his cases to the court of public opinion. However, many people in Brazil feel that his methods are worth it for a better country. In 2016, TIME magazine named Moro one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

The masculine name Sergio is the Spanish and Italian version of Sergius, which is a Roman family name that might mean “servant” in Latin. However, the name is probably of unknown Etruscan origin. The name is a popular Christian name, used to honor Saint Sergius, however, it is not commonly used in the English language.
