Nagai Naoyuki: was a Japanese samurai and Tokugawa retainer of the late Edo era.After completing a thorough education in literature, art, and military training, Nagai entered the ranks of the Tokugawa bureaucracy. He served from 1851 to 1852 as an instructor at the Kitenkan, a branch of the Shogunate's Shoheizaka academy, located in the city of Kofu. Shortly after Matthew Perry's arrival, Nagai was placed in charge of casting cannons for coastal defense, and in 1855, he was transferred to the Nagasaki Naval Training Center, where he served as its director. Katsu Kaishu later credited Nagai for much of the training center's progress, as well as the construction of one of its training ships, the Kottoru. In 1857 he went to Edo (modern-day Tokyo) on board the Kanko Maru, Japan's first steam warship, together with 103 of his students.

Nagai Nagayoshi: was a notable Japanese organic chemist and pharmacologist, best known for his study of ephedrine.Nagai continued his studies at Tokyo Imperial University and became the first doctor of pharmacy in Japan. He was sent under government sponsorship to Prussia in 1871 to study at the University of Berlin. He was the only civilian in a group of military students sent to study in Great Britain and France, and he traveled by way of the United States and Great Britain. While in Berlin, he resided at the home of Japanese diplomat Aoki Shuzo.

Kenji Nagai: was a Japanese photojournalist shot dead in Burma during the 2007 Burmese anti-government protests.Nagai continued to take photos as he lay wounded on the ground, later dying from gunshot injuries to the chest. He was the only foreign national killed in the protests.[1]Kenji Nagai grew up in Imabari, Ehime, Japan, and graduated from Imabari Nishi High School. Tatsuo Nagai: was a writer of short stories and haiku poetry active in the Showa period Japan, known for his portrayals of city life. Nagai was also known as a haiku poet under the pen-name of "Tomonkyo".Due to this encouragement, he devoted his energies to writing, publishing Kuroi Gohan ("Black Rice") in Bungei Shunju, a monthly literary journal founded by Kikuchi Kan. In 1924, together with the literary critic Kobayashi Hideo, he later launched his own monthly literary magazine called Yamamayu.

Yasutaka Nagai: a Japanese novelist, Manga author and scenario writer. He is one of the four brothers of famous mangaka Go Nagai.In 1969 he was a candidate for the Ranpo Edogawa prize for his novel Baptism of Blood (????????), being Seiichi Morimura the winner of that year[1], but he abandoned his activities as a writer, for a time, with the establishment of Dynamic Production. He would re-debut as a writer in 1981 with Shin Devilman (?·?????)(not to be confused with the manga of similar name where he also collaborated).
