Allan George "Al" Balding: was a Canadian professional golfer best known for being the first Canadian to win on the PGA Tour.Balding would go on to win an impressive number of victories in a number of different venues over a long period of time during his career. He won 10 events on the Canadian Tour from 1952 through 1973. He won four tournaments on the PGA Tour. In 1968, he won the World Cup Team Title (with George Knudson) and the Individual Title. Balding played on the Canadian National Team in the World Cup from 1956 – 1970 except in the years 1962, 1965 and 1966. Perhaps his most remarkable win came at the age of 76 when Balding captured the 2000 Canadian PGA Senior Championship. In 2002 during a senior event, Balding shot 66, twelve shots lower than his age, a feat unparalleled in the history of tournament golf according to historians at the PGA Tour.

He attended the Rondebosch Boys' High School in Cape Town, where he was active in the debating and tennis teams. He received his B.Sc. in physics in 1944 from the University of Cape Town and his M.Sc. in crystallography in 1945 from the same institution. He was a research student at Cambridge University from 1947-49, and while at Cambridge he met his future wife, Barbara Seavey, an American physics student.

He was instrumental in organizing the World Baseball Classic in 2006.[1] Selig also introduced revenue sharing.[2] He is credited for the financial turnaround of baseball during his tenure with a 400 percent increase in the revenue of MLB and annual record breaking attendance.[1] Selig enjoys a high level of support from baseball owners.[3][2] Jerome Holtzman, Major League Baseball's official historian from 1999 until his passing in 2008, believed that Selig was the best commissioner in baseball history.[2]

George William Allan: was a Canadian politician. His mother Leah Tyrer, daughter of Dr. John Gamble, married Hon. William Allan, of York (Toronto), U.C. Allan's father, William, was a pioneer who settled what was then the Township of York during John Graves Simcoe's term as Governor. William Allan eventually became the city's first postmaster and was appointed to the Legislative Council of Upper Canada and was a supporter of the Family Compact.He was a Toronto alderman from 1849 until 1855, when he was elected the 11th Mayor of Toronto. In 1858, he entered national politics representing York on the Legislative Council until Canadian Confederation. In 1867 he was nominated to the Canadian Senate as one of its first members and sat as a Conservative. In 1869 he was appointed government trustee for municipal bond fund of the Toronto and Nipissing Railway. He was chairman of the Standing Committee on Banking and Commerce for many years and was Speaker from 1888 until 1891. He remained in the Upper House until his death in 1901.

James Noble Allan: was a Canadian politician. Allan was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in the 1951 provincial election as the Progressive Conservative Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Haldimand—Norfolk. In 1955, he was appointed by Ontario Premier Leslie Frost to the cabinet as Minister of Highways. At the time, this was the government's largest department, and Allan oversaw a budget of $200 million. He was in charge of 8,000 employees. During his term, 10,000 miles of highways were built. In 1958, Allan became Frost's finance minister, and introduced the province's first sales tax, nicknamed the "Frost bite" at a rate of 3%. When Frost retired, Allan ran in the 1961 PC leadership convention, placing fourth. He was the last Ontario finance minister to report a budget surplus until the late 1990s. He retired from cabinet altogether in 1968, although he kept his seat in the legislature until retiring from politics altogether when the 1975 election was called.
