More a hard hitting slogger than a stylist, he began his cricketing career with promise, performing well in New South Wales colts and under-age sides. Unable to get into the New South Wales Blues, he tried for the Canberra Comets instead. He played for Canberra until they withdrew from the ING Cup, and then transferred to Tasmania.

He eventually lost his place in the side due to interstate top order batsman in Jason Arnberger and Matthew Mott coming into the side.

Graeme Christopher Hughes: is an Australian sportsman turned broadcaster, born in Stanmore, Sydney. He is the last man to have played both rugby league and cricket for New South Wales. His father Noel Hughes played cricket for Worcestershire in the 1950s. As a sportsman, Hughes found most success in rugby league, playing for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs as well as representing his state at the age of 19. Hughes appeared in 20 first-class and three List A games, all for New South Wales between the 1975-76 and 1978-79 seasons. He never produced a spectacular batting performance, his top score being the 65 he hit against Victoria at the MCG in his final season.
