Philip Ian Hodgins: was an Australian poet.[1]Philip Hodgins was born in Shepparton, Victoria in 1959 and spent his childhood on his parent's dairy farm at nearby Katandra West. He went to school in Geelong and later moved to Melbourne where he worked for several years with a publishing house and before moving to live in Maryborough in central Victoria.Hodgkins' experience of farm life is strongly present through much of his poetry. His verse novella Dispossessed describe the last weeks of a poor rural family about to be evicted from their farm. Hodgins also wrote about Australian Rules football.

Philip Salom had an isolated childhood before boarding at Bunbury during high school. While studying Agricultural Science at University of Western Australia he developed his passion for the arts, painting and singing in the university choir. Uninterested in his course he left university, took various casual jobs, and started writing on a 1972 painting trip to New Zealand. On returning to Perth he enrolled in Curtin University's Literature and Creative Writing course, one of the first of its kind in Australia.

He was a New Democratic Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1975 to 1995, and was a cabinet minister in the government of Bob Rae. He was first elected to the Ontario legislature in the provincial election of 1975, defeating incumbent Liberal Leonard Braithwaite by 1,256 votes in the Toronto riding of Etobicoke. He was re-elected by a greater margin in the election of 1977, and fended off a stronger challenge from Progressive Conservative Aileen Anderson in the 1981 election. In the elections of 1985, 1987 and 1990, he was elected without difficulty. Philip supported Bob Rae for the provincial NDP leadership in 1982.
