He received a B.A. degree from Brigham Young University, with a major in English and a minor in mathematics. Skousen went on to study linguistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, there earning his Ph.D. degree in 1972. He has also held the position of assistant professor at the University of Texas. He is the older brother of libertarian author Mark Skousen and survivalist/economist author Joel Skousen.
