In 1939, he was elected as a Liberal provincial member of Quebec's assembly at the Saint-Sauveur riding and served in the cabinet of Premier Adélard Godbout as Minister of State and Minister of Land and Forests. Hamel was re-elected at Saint-Sauveur in 1944, but was defeated in the 1948 and 1952 elections.

Philippe Hamel: was a nationalist and progressive politician in Quebec, Canada. Hamel entered politics to achieve the nationalization of all privately-owned electric companies. He first won a seat to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec as an Action libérale nationale candidate in the 1935 election in the district of Québec-Centre. When his party merged with the Conservative Party of Quebec to form the Union Nationale, Hamel became one of Maurice Duplessis's most important campaign leaders. He was returned to office in the 1936 election and the Union Nationale won the election.

René Hamel: was a local politician in Quebec, Canada. He served as Member of the Canadian Parliament and as Member of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec. He was the party’s provincial candidate in the district of Saint-Maurice in 1944, but lost the election against Marc Trudel. The following year though, he successfully ran in the federal district of Saint-Maurice—Laflèche. After the was, the party quickly dissolved and by 1949 Hamel was sitting as an Independent MP. He lost re-election in that same year. Hamel, who opposed Premier Maurice Duplessis, made a political comeback in 1952. Benefiting from a strong support among Shawinigan’s labor class population, he was elected Liberal Member of the Legislative Assembly for the district of Saint-Maurice. Hamel became of one the most effective Liberal floor leaders. Nonetheless, Hamel was slightly re-elected against Shawinigan Mayor Gaston Hardy in 1956. He also was a candidate for the leadership of the Liberal Party in 1958, but was defeated by Jean Lesage. In 1960 the Liberals won the provincial election and Lesage became Premier. Shawinigan got a new bridge. Hamel was appointed to the Cabinet. He was Minister of Municipal Affairs from 1960 to 1961, Minister of Labour from 1960 to 1963 and Attorney General from 1963 to 1964.
