He obtained his B.S. degree in civil engineering from National Taiwan University in 1962. He has been granted a doctorate degree in Structural Engineering from Cornell University, as well as honorary doctorates from Purdue University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and National Taiwan University. He has received the Benjamin Garver Lamme gold medal, from the American Society for Engineering Education.
