Oswald Marian Balzer: was a Polish historian of law and statehood, one of the most renowned Polish historians of his times.In 1887 he became a professor at the University of Lwów. Between 1895 and 1896 he also briefly served as its rector. Since 1891 until his death he was also the director of City Archives in Lwów. In 1888 he was offered a seat in the Polish Academy of Skills, as well as several other scientific societies, both in Poland and abroad. In 1901 he founded the Society for the Support of Polish Science in Lwów (Tow. dla Popierania Nauki Pol. we Lwowie), the first such society in the city, later to be renamed to Lwow Scientific Society (1920).

Oswald Pirow: was a South African lawyer and far right politician, who held office as minister of Justice and Defence.Pirow came under the influence of Tielman Roos, an important figure in Transvaal and became a member of James Barry Munnik Hertzog's National Party being elected to parliament for Zoutpansberg in 1924. He was eliminated in 1929 however after running against Jan Smuts in Standerton.[1] However, despite this he was appointed to the Cabinet as Minister of Justice in place of Roos, who stood down, initially as a nominated senator. He won a by-election in October 1929 in Gezina however to confirm things and continued to represent the seat until 1943.[1]

Oswald's father was a Swiss-German immigrant and his mother from Italy. The family name was changed from "Oschwald" due to concerns of discrimination. His mother taught music privately to aristocrats and by age twelve he had his first recital. His "farewell recital" occurred at age 16, after this he went to study in Europe.[1]
