José María Figueres Olsen: served as President of Costa Rica on three occasions: 1948–1949, 1953–1958, and 1970–1974. In 1953, Figueres created the Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN), the most successful party in Costa Rican political history, and was returned to power in the 1953.4, 10 He has been considered to be the most important political figure in Costa Rica's history. Figueres happily cooperated with North American military plans. After the United States established the School of the Americas in the Panama Canal Zone to train Latin American officers in Anti-Communist techniques, more Costa Rican "police" graduated from the School between 1950 and 1965 than did officers of any other hemispheric nation except Nicaragua.

Juan Gualberto Gómez Ferrer: was an Afro-Cuban revolutionary leader in the Cuban War of Independence against Spain. He was a "close collaborator of [José] Martí's," and alongside him helped plan the uprising and unite the island's black population behind the rebellion. He was an activist for independence and a journalist who worked on and later founded several pivotal anti-royalist and pro-racial equality newspapers. He authored numerous works on liberty and racial justice in Latin America as well.

Undrafted by Major League Soccer out of college, Ferrar signed with Charlotte Eagles on March 9, 2010, after a good showing at their invitational-only tryout. He made his professional debut on May 1, 2010 in Charlotte's 2-1 loss against rival Charleston Battery at Charleston's Blackbaud Stadium.
