His father was a Polish Member of Parliament 1922 - 1928. Both his parents died in the Soviet Gulag camps.Trained as a pilot at Deblin, he saw action in Poland in 1939 and France in 1940. During the Battle of Britain, he trained the pilots who were in short supply. His brother Jan Bienkowski, was also a pilot, shot down over Cherbourg in 1944. As well as Squadron Leader of 303, he also did a stint as Squadron Leader of 302. He finished the war as Wing Commander.
