Prem Tinsulanonda: a retired Thai military officer who served as Prime Minister of Thailand from March 3, 1980 to August 4, 1988. He now serves as the chief advisor of the King of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej. He was as a fierce critic of Thaksin Shinawatra, who was Prime Minister from 2001 to 2006. Consequently, Thaksin's supporters and some political critics have accused Prem of masterminding the 2006 military coup that overthrew Thaksin, as well as in the appointment of the post-coup legislature and Interim Government of Surayud Chulanont. The military junta that overthrew the Thaksin government denied that Prem had any important political role. However, Thaksin's accusations involving Prem have been widely accepted as true, even among Thaksin's opponents. Many Prem supporters argue that the steps were justified in an attempt to rid Thailand of Thaksin's influence.
