Her mother, Irma Berner, was the descendent of Dutch Mennonites invited to Russia by Catherine II. Her father, Eugeniusz German, was an accountant of German descent, born in Lódz, Poland. In 1937 he was executed by the NKVD in Urgench. Anna and her mother were sent to live in Kyrgyzstan.In 1946 Anna's mother applied for repatriation to Poland.
