During his captaincy Tasmania won their first first-class match after a winless period of over 20 years, making him the first successful Tasmanian captain since Jim Atkinson in the early 1930s. Emerson Rodwell attended The Hutchins School in Hobart and showed an early talent as an athlete. He was a promising Australian rules football player, who regularly represented Hutchins in the Old Scholars Football Association (OSFA), but his true talent lay in cricket. On debut he made 14 and 23, but performed much better with the ball, taking 3/67 in the first innings, but not getting to bowl in the second, as Victoria won by 10 wickets within 9 overs. By 1950 Rodwell had been appointed as state captain, and enjoyed reasonable success, winning one and drawing two of the five matches he led the side for.

Although unsuccessful at test level, Burn is best known for being one of the most prolific batsmen in Tasmania at club level in the nineteenth century. Tasmania's best batsman of the 1890s at club and first-class level, leading the Tasmanian Grade Cricket batting averages on 11 occasions throughout his career. n his first-class cricket career, which lasted from the 1883-84 season through to 1909-10, he made two centuries, with 119 the higher. He also managed to take 14 wickets at the respectable average of 22.85 with his right-arm medium pace bowling. Burn was also Tasmania's first successful first-class captain, leading the team to six victories in the 14 first-class matches that he led them for. Burn's selection for the Australian touring party in 1890 bordered on the farcical: he was picked as a wicket-keeper in what Wisden termed "the one serious mistake in making up the side". Only after he had joined the team on the ship to England was it discovered that he had never kept wicket. He played in the first two Tests on the tour, both of them lost. In the first, he batted at No 10 and No 11; in the second, he was promoted to No 6 in the first innings and opened in the second innings. In all, he scored 41 runs.

About 10 years of hard work followed before the merit of his work was recognized. In 1911 a small shop was started in Bligh-street, Sydney, to sell works of art produced in Australia and for a time Gruner took charge of it. He then became an assistant to Julian Ashton at the Sydney Art School, and during Ashton's illness took complete charge of the classes for about three months. In 1916 he was the winner of the Wynne art prize with a small landscape "Morning Light" which was purchased by the national gallery of New South Wales. He was the winner of the Wynne prize again in 1919, and in the following year the trustees commissioned him to paint a large picture for the gallery "The Valley of the Tweed".

With the Curator of the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Robert Campbell, she helped found the Art Group, a discussion group through which she promoted modernist ideas and attitudes in art and art education. However, in the 1950s Blumann became disillusioned with the possibilities of art in Western Australia and only painted sporadically. Her work first received national attention in the late 1970s some fifteen years before she died in 1990, aged 93.
