The legal profession seems to have been the first aim of his education He successively studied and taught law in the Universities of Avignon, Montpellier, Orléans, and Paris.

Alexandre Louis Joseph Bertrand: was a French archaeologist who was a native of Rennes. He was the son of physician Alexandre Jacques François Bertrand (1795-1831) and elder brother to mathematician Joseph Louis François Bertrand (1822-1900). Bertrand studied at Ecole Normale Superieure de la rue d'Ulm, and after a three-year expedition to Babylon he became a member of the French School at Athens in 1849. From 1851 to 1857 he was a professor of rhetoric at Rennes.

He was the son of physician Alexandre Jacques François Bertrand and the brother of archaeologist Alexandre Bertrand. His father died when Joseph was only nine years old

Philippe Bertrand: was a French sculptor of the late 17th and early 18th century. He received commissions for sculptures for both the Château de Marly and Versailles. In November, 1701, he was made a full member of the Académie de peinture et de sculpture upon the display of a royal commission of 1700,[3] his small bronze of the Rape of Helen, a svelte composition of three figures with a debt to Giambologna's Rape of a Sabine Woman.[4] He was known for sculpting flowing, graceful, and even flying figures, particularly in his bronzes.[5]
