Parliament would be dissolved a year later and Caston ran for re-election in the new Rocky Mountain electoral district as Jasper—Edson was abolished. Caston would run against Sutlatycky for the second time. An unusual event happened in that election as the Progressive Conservatives had 2 endorsed candidates running under their party banner for that district.

From 1989 to 1990, he was the chairman of the Conference Board of Canada. He was the Chancellor of the Université de Montréal from 1986 until 1990. He was appointed to the Senate, as a member of the Progressive Conservative caucus. He represented the senatorial division of Stadacona, Quebec, on September 23, 1990. He resigned on December 9, 1992.

Castonguay left political life in 2004 as he did not seek re-election. Jean-Claude D'Amours won the Madawaska-Restigouche riding for the Liberal party that year.
