Jakob Heine: was a German orthopaedist. He is most famous for his 1840 study into poliomyelitis, which was the first medical report on the disease, and the first time the illness was recognised as a clinical entity. Poliomyelitis is often known as Heine-Medin disease, after the work of Heine and Karl Oskar Medin.

Johann Georg Heine: was a German orthopedic mechanic and physician. He is considered the father of Orthopedics in Germany. He was apprenticed to a cutler at Überlingen and worked as a journeyman cutler in Esslingen am Neckar, Mannheim and Straßburg. At length he left Southern Germany and took his residence in Berlin from 1794 to 1798, where he got into contact with Barthel von Siebold, a son of a Würzburg surgeon Karl Kaspar von Siebold.

Joseph Heine: was a German physician and a high civil servant in the Bavarian health service in the Rheinkreis. Heine widened his medical knowledge by a number of journeys abroad. In the winter of 1828/29 he studied dermatology and surgery in Paris. His tutor in the latter discipline was Guillaume Dupuytren. The departure of his father Johann Georg Heine to Holland in 1828 forced the son to return to Würzburg, where—together with his cousin Bernhard—he took over the management of the Karolinen-Institut for one year.

Maximilian Meyer Heine: was a German doctor, who served with the Russian Army during the Russo-Turkish War war and who later became a Russian state councilor. He was the youngest brother of Heinrich Heine, the famous German romantic poet. After studying medicine at the universities of Berlin and Munich, he graduated as a doctor in 1829, and in the same year joined the Russian army as a surgeon. During his army service, he took part in the invasion of the Balkans with General Diebitschs, and in 1832 he participated in the fight against the Polish rebellion.[citation needed] Returning to Russia, he lived in Saint Petersburg and became the chief surgeon appointed to a military school.
