Sir Edward Sabine: was an Irish astronomer, scientist, ornithologist and explorer. He was born in Dublin and died at East Sheen in Surrey.Two branches of Sabine's work in particular deserve very high credit: Determination of the length of the seconds pendulum, a simple pendulum whose time period on the surface of the Earth is two seconds, that is, one second in each direction; and extensive researches connected with the Earth's magnetic field. He led the effort to establish a system of magnetic observatories in various parts of British territory all over the globe and a great part of his life was devoted to their direction, and to the reduction and discussion of their observations.

He was honorary secretary of the Royal Horticultural Society from 1810 to 1830, and treasurer and vice-chairman of the Zoological Society of London.Edward Sabine was a member of John Ross's Arctic voyage in 1818. He sent Joseph a specimen of a new gull which had been discovered during the expedition, which Joseph named Sabine's Gull (Larus sabini) in honour of his brother.
