Yan Zhitui: was a Chinese scholar, calligrapher, painter, musician, and government official who served four different Chinese states during the late Southern and Northern Dynasties: the Liang Dynasty in southern China, the Northern Qi and Northern Zhou Dynasties of northern China, and their successor state that reunified China, the Sui Dynasty. Yan Zhitui was a supporter of Buddhism in China despite criticism by many of his Confucian-taught peers. Yan was also the first person in history to mention the use of toilet paper.[1]

In 2008, Yan was named as one of world's Top 100 public intellectuals by American journal Foreign Policy.

Yan Pei-Ming: is a Chinese painter born in 1960 in Shanghai. Since 1982 he has lived in Dijon, France. His most famous paintings are "epic-sized" portraits of Mao Zedong worked out in black and white or red and white. He works with big brushes, and his paintings are brought to life by the rapid brush strokes which structure the picture space.[1]

He rose to the position of vice-minister for culture by the 1960s but later spent eight years in prison following the Cultural Revolution. Today the Xia Yan Film Literature Awards are named in his honour.
