His father worked in Tehran's Grand Market in the Crystal and Glass business, and his mother was a housewife. The last of four children, he grew up in Tehran and spent most of his free time painting and sketching and reading comic books, though few were available because of the political and economic climate. He liked to make crafts using cardboard, clay, wood, and other materials, samples of which survive. He made a bookcase at 16 for his large collection of books.
