While studying at Trinity College, Glenalmond, he worked as a voluntary assistant at the Royal Scottish Museum from 1905 to 1907. In 1913 he married Gwendolen Beatrice Millard, whose family lived in India and was closely involved with the BNHS. (Walter Samuel Millard) In 1920 he became an assistant in the Department of Zoology at the Natural History Museum, becoming Keeper of Zoology in 1945, and Director of the Museum in August 1947. He retired on April 30, 1950 and was knighted in June of that year.
